What Jill's House Would Mean to Me

Shelly Cumberland

Cumberland Family and Friends My son Tyler was born with no problems, but at 8 months old Dr. Pearl diagnosed him with bi-lateral perisylvan polymicrogyria which means that his brain development was interrupted during the second trimester. He later developed epilepsy and has been on seizure medication ever since. Tyler is a happy 11 year old boy that requires a lot of care such as feeding, dressing, and bathing. Being vigilant with him is imperative as he is very active and adventurous. Even though I take personal care of him, there are still doctor appointments, IEP meetings, and coordinating my own health care. Since Tyler’s care is constant it does take a toll on me because I am a single mom and work at a full time job.

Jill’s House would provide a place where Tyler would be safe, comfortable, and loved. Tyler loves to make friends and Jill's House will offer the opportunity to play games and have social interaction with his peers. With the confidence of knowing that Tyler’s needs would be taken care of, I could look to caring for myself a little bit.

I would be able to go out to dinner without having to rush through my meal, go out to see a movie, or read a book without the baby monitor on listening for nocturnal tonic/clonic seizures, etc. I could basically do all the things that many people do on a normal basis.

With the emotional, financial, and spiritual support that the Jill’s House community can provide, I know that I have hope for respite and can look forward to less stressful and somewhat calmer days ahead.
